Free · no email, no sign-up

A warm 963 Hz solfeggio ambient layer for quiet focus or meditation. We present tones honestly: they create a calm sound environment — the evidence for specific 'frequency' effects is mixed, so enjoy it as ambience, not a cure.

How to use it

Headphones for the fullest sound. Use as a background for meditation, journaling, or rest.

Where the solfeggio numbers came from

The solfeggio frequencies are usually presented as an ancient scale, recovered from a medieval hymn and suppressed for centuries. The actual history is much shorter. The set of numbers — 396, 417, 528, 639, 741, 852, and the extension to 963 — was produced in the 1970s by applying a numerological reduction technique to verse numbers in a book of Genesis, and published in the 1990s. The medieval hymn is real; the frequencies were not derived from it, and there is no historical record of anyone tuning anything to them.

Each number in the set reduces to 3, 6 or 9 under repeated digit summation, which is the pattern the method was designed to produce. That is the origin of the "3-6-9" mysticism attached to the scale. It is a property of the arithmetic, not of sound.

What 963 Hz is, physically

963 Hz is a perfectly ordinary pitch, sitting a little above B5 on a piano. It is well inside the range where human hearing is most sensitive, which is why a sustained sine tone at that frequency can feel piercing on its own and needs softening, layering and slow movement to be listenable for any length of time.

There is no body of evidence showing that this frequency does anything distinct from any other tone of similar pitch and loudness. The handful of studies that circulate in support of the solfeggio set are small, and the best known of them measured a change in a cell culture rather than anything about a person listening to music. We would be doing you a disservice to present that as support.

Why we still offer it

Because high, sustained, slowly moving tones make a genuinely good meditation environment, and a lot of people find this particular register clarifying. That is a legitimate reason to listen to a sound. It just is not a health claim, and we are not going to dress it up as one.

Use it quietly, with headphones or a decent speaker — thin phone speakers make high tones harsh. Twenty minutes is plenty.
