How to use it

Play at the start of a work block. Headphones help you tune out the room.

Ninety seconds is the point

Most focus audio is designed to keep you working. This one is designed to get you started, and then get out of the way. That is a different problem, and for a lot of people it is the harder one: the difficulty is rarely staying at the desk for an hour, it is crossing the thirty seconds between deciding to work and actually working.

Short, fixed rituals are useful here because they convert a decision into a cue. If the same ninety seconds of sound always precedes the same kind of work, the sound stops being background and becomes a signal. You are not waiting to feel ready; you are doing the small thing that reliably comes before the work, and readiness follows.

Why it does not run for an hour

A long ambient track invites you to make the audio part of the task — adjusting it, skipping ahead, deciding the mood is wrong. A ninety-second launcher cannot become the task. It finishes, and then there is nothing left to fiddle with except the thing you sat down to do.

This also keeps the ritual cheap. A twenty-minute preparation routine is one you will skip on the days you most need it. A ninety-second one survives bad days, which is the only real test of a habit.

How to use it

Decide the single next action before you press play — not the project, the action. "Open the file and write the first sentence" is a start. "Work on the report" is not. Let the track run once. When it ends, begin.

Repeat it with the same work type for a couple of weeks before judging it. The first few runs are just sound; the association is what makes it useful, and associations need repetition.

On why repetition is what builds the association in the first place: how repetition builds new neural pathways.
